OBITUARY
MR. CHARLES HAWKEN AGED NINETY-SIX YEARS [by telegbaph—own* cobbespoxdext] WHANGAREI, WednesdayThe death occurred in his sleep early this morning of Mr. Charles Hawken, of Maunu, Whangarei, who celebrated his 96th birthday on May 11. On his birthday Mr. Hawken was in the very best of health, and,<Hn spite of hii f great age, his death has come as s shock to his many friends. Mr. Hawken was born in Cornwall and at the age of 17 he sailed in the ship Castilian for Australia, landing at Sydney. After spending some time in Australia he came to New Zealand in the ship Worsley in 1859. his father having previously come out from England and acquired a property in the Whau Valley, Whangarei. Mr. Hawken helped his father to improve the property and then went to Pake? kohe, where he took up a section, leaving only when trouble with the Maoris made that course necessary. He married Miss Elizabeth Udy, daughter of . the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Udy, of Mount Eden. By a coincidence both bride and groom had been born in the parish of St. Austell, Cornwall, although they . had not been aware of e'ach other's existence until they met in Auckland. The young couple settled at Maungatapere, near ■ Whangarei, where they remained for 24 years, when Mr. Hawken purchased another property at Maunu, where he had since lived. He was a promoter of the Maunußoad Board and occupied a seat for 14 year»» including several terms as chairman. He was also a foundation member of the Whangarei Agricultural and Pm* toral Society, and he was the last surviving member of the first committee. He was for mitny years a member of the Marsden Licensing Committee. He served soon after his arrival in New Zealand under Sir Osborne Gibbs, who commanded the troops in this district. Mrs. Hawken died in 1912. There were 17 children, 15 of whom are still l' T " ing. The eldest is 70 and the youngest 50. There are 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

MR. WILLIAM C. SMITH The death has occurred of Mr._ Wlliam C. Smith, of Palmerston « the age of 64. After receiving his. «W- | cation at Nelson College and Auckla University College, Mr. Smith entered, upon a teaching career in Nelson. IjM teaching in Wanganui, Auckland, Canterbury and Marlborough. Transferred to Niue Island, he was in charge primarv and technical education uni 1915, when he undertook pioneer teaming service in llarotonga. He leave# j| widow and three daughters. '
