LOANS SUGGESTED

ONE TREE HILL BOROUGH LIBRARY AND ROAD WORK The question whether tho time was opportune for the One Tree Hill Borough Council to consider raising loans to provide a library and to widen a portion of the Great South Road was raised by tho Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, at a meeting of the council last night. Mr. Goldstine said that if councillors were of that opinion ho would propose that the borough officers should prepare comprehensive reports on both matters. As several members of the council were absent, it was decided to postpone consideration until next meeting.

The Mayor said the old fire station in Green Lane, adjacent to the Great South Road, could be altered and suitably fitted to provide reading rooms and a library, on condition that the City Council agreed to enter into a reciprocal arrangement whereby equal facilities and concessions would be given to residents and ratepayers of the city and borough. Under the scheme, city residents between Newmarket and Ellerslie would have library facilities which they did not at present enjoy and the One Tree Hill residents on the western side of tho borough would be able to use the Epsom Library. An expenditure of approximately £3OOO would bo involved, which would necessitate a loan of that amount, the Mayor added. To pay interest and sinking fund on tho loan, and to maintain tho library, would require, in addition to subscriptions, a rate of Id in the pound, providing about £650 a year.

Referring to the Great South Road, Mr. Goldstine said the groat increase in through traffic had made it necessary to widen the carriageway between the trapi terminus and Green Park Road. A loan of between £3OOO and £4OOO would be required, the interest and sinking fund for which could be provided out of revenue.
