WAIKOKOPU PORT

DEEP WATER PROPOSAL NO SUPPORT FROM GISBORNE [by telegraph—own correspondent] GISBORNE, Tuesday Reporting adversely upon the proposal of the Wairoa Harbour Board that the prospective deep-water port at Waikokopu should be developed jointly by the Gisborne and Wairoa districts, the secretary-manager of the Gisborne Harbour Board, Mr. H. A. Barton, yesterday produced several grounds on which the scheme must fail to secure the support of his authority. First among these was the fact that the diversion of large ships from Gisborne to Waikokopu would result in heavy loss of revenue to the Gisborne Board, which would have to recoup itself to meet fixed charges by levying a heavier rate on its district. Tbere was also the prohibitive cost of rail transport between Gisborne and Waikokopu on various lines of produce which were handled by overseas vessels. The report also suggested that the costs of operation at Waikokopu must be larger than was anticipated by the Wairoa Board. Finally, there was the argument based on the opinions of tho Kaiti works management thai, Gisborne already offered loading facilities for primary produce fully adequate to the needs of shipping. The board adopted the report without discussion.
