NEW PROFESSOR
UNIVERSITY OF ~OTAGO FINE SCHOLASTIC RECORD [BT TELEGRAPH —OWN CORK ESPONDENT] DUNEDIN, Tuesday The appointment as professor of chemistry at Otago University, in succession to the late Dr. J. K. H. Inglis, has been accepted by Dr. Frederick G. Soper, Ph.D., D.Sc., who is at present senior lecturer in chemistry at the University of North Wales. Dr. Soper is 37 years old, and is a recognised authority in some branches of physical chemistry. He also possesses a wide knowledge of organic and general chemistry. Dr. Soper graduated B.Sc. with firstclass honours in chemistry at the University of North Wales in 1920, and obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy four years later. In 1928 he obtained a Doctorate of Science in recognition of his important contributions to the advancement of the study of chemistry. Since 1920 he has been responsible for the teaching of physical chemistry at the University of North Wales. Ho has delivered all the lectures on this subject to the final and honours classes, and has supervised the practical work of these classes. He has also initiated and directed research in physical chemistry, and 13 of his students have been awarded the higher degrees of Ph.D. and M.SpDr. Soper is familiar with the chemical laboratories of most of the English universities and university colleges, and with much of the special equipment employed in research. He has published 26 original papers, mainjy in the Proceedings of the Royal Society and in Journal of the Chemical Society. He will come to Dunedin highly recommended by English chemists for his up-to-date outlook and his sound academic judgment. • *
