CAUGHT IN MACHINERY

ORDEAL OF WORKMAN FREED WITH FLAME CUTTER [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY, April 18 Workmen had to use an oxy-acetylene flame to free an injured comrade when he was trapped in machinery the other day at spinning mills at Newtown. -The injured man, Mr. James Currie, aged 60, waited in agony while workmen cut away steel rollers which had crushed his left arm from his fingertips almost to his shoulder. Later the arm was amputated. Mr. Currie,. who is a textile worker, was attending to* a machine when his hand was caught between the rollers and drawn in between them. Other workmen stopped the machine almost immediately, but it was found impossible to free the injured man or to dismantle the machine without inflicting further injuries. An oxy-acetylene plant was set up and a roller was cut away.
