AVONDALE RACES

FROCKS ON THE LAWN VOGUE FOR TAILORED TWEEDS A large gathering was attracted to Avondale on Saturday for tlio opening day of the Avondale Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting. Although it rained toward the end of the afternoon, enjoyment was by no means spoiled. Tailored suits and ensembles were much in evidence, tweeds in indistinct checks and self-stripes or brightly flecked in contrasting colours being both attractive and serviceable. Colour and variety were achieved with scarves, which in most cases were of bold design and brilliant hue. Hats were generally of felt or velour and showed a great diversity of colours and shapes. Among those present were: —Mrs. J. IS. Wells, who wore a leaf brown suit and a brown felt hat; Mrs. J. C. Bealo, in a maize cloth ensemble and a felt liat to tone; Mrs. P. J. Delany, black tailored suit and a black velour hat; Mrs. C. E. Lawford, black frock under a short fur jacket and a fur cap; Mrs. W. 13. Colbeck, marine blue tweed suit and a small blue straw hat; Mrs. Duncan Clerk, black cloth ensemble and a black straw hat; Mrs. G. W. Hutchison, fawn tweed ensemble relieved with brown and a brown tri.coniG hat; Mrs. Alison, grey flecked tweed coat and a black felt hat; Mrs. E. 11. B.
