NOTES ON THE RACING

WIN FOR THANGILAMBA KING MESIOR'S HURDLES DELRAIN BEATS LIGHT COMEDY BY ARCHER Showing more solidity than in her previous races, the threc-vear-old Thangilamba scored an eiid-t,o-end victory in the Rosebank Handicap, comfortably defeating the favourite, Mainland, who had every chance and was always in the first three. Like most of the progeny of Whirlwind, Thangilamba is improving with ago and now that she has opened her winning account she may not be long in scoring again. Sergia ran on fairly well to get third, just boating Paso Robles, who made a fine showing. Prince Abb was closer in lifth position at the finish than at any other stage. Cyllaros, badly placed early, and Lo Chasseur did best of the others. Gemland and Hohana were about the middle of the field when they fell just after entering the straight. Gemland broke a hind leg and was destroyed. An inquiry into the cause of tho accident will be held today. i Modern Maid Defeated Tho favourite Modern Maid made a good bid for victory in tho Avondalo Hurdles, but she was decisively beaten by the second fancy King Mestor, who is much improved. King Mestor was fairly well back in the early stages, but lie moved up entering the straight and was in front with Modern Maid over the last two fences. He was always going the bettor of the two in the run homo and had no difficulty in winning by over a length. Golden England made a very creditable showing for third, although ho was well beaten by the first two. Swift Spear displayed promise and when ho has had a little moro experience ho should take a lot of beating in the class. Prince of Orango was closer at tho finish than at any other stage. The Hiker was badly beaten and none of tho others gave any serious trouble, Ruling King being beaten when he fell at the last fence. The moderately-fancied Delrain brought off a surprise in the Titirangi Hurdles, paying double figures. Delrain was about the middle of tho field for most of tho journey and he came prominently into the picture in the straight, staying on solidly to defeat the favourite Light Comedy, who was in behind tho pacemaker Psychologist for most of the way and looked like winning when tho field straightened up. Tho first and second beat tho others very comfortably and Adalene's third was just fair. Keith Lu was in the rear most of the way and was running on in fourth positioii ahead of Tuaheahe. who was also staying on. Miss Lu appeared likely at the loot of the straight but sho failed near the fnd. Psychologist pulled up very lame. Flood Tide Runs Thi;d The three-year-old Flood Tide was favourite for the Foley Memorial Handicap, but the best he could do was to finish third to tho consistent Sinking Fund, who was at a good price, and Galilee. Star Artist made most of the running from Galilee and Sinking Fund, but sho gave way at the home turn. Galilee then assumed the lead and appeared likely to win. However, Sinking Fund was being patiently ridden by N. H. McKenzie and when asked for an effort soon ran to Galilee and beat her homo by a length. Sinking Fund and Galilee went fine races, the latter recording her best effort over a middle distance. Flood Tide fought on in the gamest possible fashion under pressure in the straight, just missing second. Maine was a good fourth and Velocipede, who was last early, and wide out round the homo turn, finished solidly to get fifth. The well-supported Gay Rose appeared likely when she moved up at the home turn, but she failed to sustain her effort.

In spite of the fact that ho drew an outside post position Anion was made a strong favourite for tho Oakley Handicap. Anion and Palustre went very fast early from the outside to reach the front after going about a furlong, and it was not surprising that they ' weakened when Golden Blonde and Karl challenged in the straight. Golden Blonde held the lead inside the distance and won convincingly from Karl, who finished-very strongly to just defeat Anion for third. Palustro was a very closo fourth. Gay Flier and Philemup wero next, and they were closer at the finish than at any other stage. Ned Cuttle was never prominent, failing to show - his usual early brilliancy. Three-Year-Old Wins

On the strength of his running in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, the three-year-old Tonnerre was installed favourite for the Railway Handicap, and he justified the support by winning easily. Tonnerre drew No. 13, one fz'om the extreme outside, at the start and took about a furlong to reach the front. After that he was always travelling like a winner and ho practically gave nothing a chance. Pr.'ncess Star, who dropped in behind early, Stayed on solidly to just beat Triune for second. BeHkyrian, after attempting to go with Tonnerre in the early stages ; was a good fourth. Coronis and Crooning were next and thev were both running on strongly, the latter coming from a long way back. The top-weiglit Rereatu was never sighted and was one of the last to finish. Epris was last early and never became prominent. His form in Auckland has fallen short of expectation. The Whau Handicap provided 0110 of the finest finishes of the day and about six horses had winning chances in tho last furlong. Victory went to the consistent Loombination, who ran right up to the form he displayed at lOllorslie, where he ran two fine races. Loombination followed tho pace-maker, Barograph, until reaching the straight, and then went on to win nicely after stalling off several determined challenges. Shy came home very strongly on tho outside for second and King Tut. after looking extremely dangerous at the distance, weakened a little for third. Tutor stayed on to got fourth ahead of Vera Aero, avlio made a determined dash at the distance only to tire in the last 50 yards after drawing almost level with the leaders. Gay Sister tfas another who was well in the fight until right near tho end. Outsider Finishes W3ll An outsider, High Tea, finished brilliantly to win tho Chevalier Handicap and return a dividend of over a score. Sebrof attempted to win all the way and it appeared as if'be might succeed when he withstood challenges from Lornacre, Fleetvvind and Dancing Lady and was still in front inside the distance. However, High Tea was travelling woll and ho headed Sebrof near the post to win by a length. Dark Shadow finished fast from the ruck to get third a length awav, and ho should be worth keeping in mind, as it was his first race for some time. Fleetwind ran her best race for some time and Lornacre was a close fifth. Gmlluut Knight was prominent to the distance and then faded. RACING FIXTURES April 20—Avondale Jockey Club.
