CLOSE OE THE SEASON f COMBINED EVENTS DECIDED CRUISING AND HARBOUR RACES The yacht racing season in Auckland >as officially closed on Saturday afternoon, when cruising and harbour races "were held under the control of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association. All clases; from tbe A class keel yachts of the Royal New Zealand lYacht Squadron to the l'Jft. Gin. "flatties" of tho Takapuna Boating Club, / xere represented. A hard north-easterly wind was blowing, which made conditions very trying, especially for the smaller boats. Large entries were received by tho various clubs, but many of the boats failed . ito start, while others retired after sailing Part of the courso. Z class boat and the 18ft M class boat •Mslolo, capsized, Ihe Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held a general handicap for keel yachts to Matiatia and a harbour race for class M. Sirona An excellent start, was effected in the race for class M,_ all the competitors crossing the line within seconds of one another. Manaia was first to show out and then came Mawhiti, Mann, Manene, Maroro. The beat to Resolution buoy saw Manu take the lead, followed by Mororo and Manene. Mann continued her lead on the run up to Kinj's Wharf and was first to make the turi,. Maroro was in second position until jut*, before rounding the mark, where her mainsail got foul of the crosstrees, and she was passed at the buoy by Manene. The time«i at this stage were: —Manu, 4h 18m 13s; Manene. 4h 18m 445; Manaia, 4h 18m 455; Maroro, 4h 18m 475; Mawhiti, 4h 19m ,435. Man a held her position in the second round, but the other boats changed places on several occasions. At the Sandspit beacon Manene, which was holding second place and was fast overhauling Manu, carried away her spinnaker and dropped back. Manu drew further ahead and Maroro pasned Manene . The race started at 3.34 p.m. The finishing times were:—Manui, 5h 0m 20s; Maroro, 5h 0m 355; Manene, 5h lm 40s: Mawhiti, 5h 3m 3Gs; Manaia, 5h sm. 12s. The youthful skippers wer</ all ready waiting for gunfire and handled their boats with great skill, only one craft out of 14 starters capsizing, Tauhau was first away and was followed by Te Utu, Water Beetle Ranoni. The race for naval service whalers was abandoned, only one whaler. R.N.V.R. No. 1, making an appearance. The keel yachts of the Royal Isow Zealand Yacht Squadron competed in a general handicap to Matiatia, and were sent away to a very poor start. Waitangi started on her course before she actually reached the line and was ordered to return, which cost her 4m. All the boats with the exception of Rawene were reefed and on the beat down the harbour they stood on port tack. Some fetched the eastern tide deflector, but others had to make a board to clear it. Ngatoa worked out, a short lead lifter passing the deflector, and then followed Tawera, Rawene and Moana. Tawera' passed Ngatoa in llobaon Bay. but a little later Ngatoa regained her position. Rawene was steadily gaining on the leading boats, which again changed places approaching the Tamaki clubhouse. Olf Point Bastion tho order was Ngatoa, Tawera, Rawene, Waiomo, Altair, Prize. After clearing the clubhouse Tawera headed Ngatoa, and shortly afterwards Rawene overhauled both boats and led for the remainder of the course. Ngatoa shook out to full sail at Rangitoto and Tawera, which had three reefs in, shook out one of them off Islington Bay. Prize, Waitangi and Moana made a very close race the three boats finishing within 42 seconds of one another. Little Jim carried away her mainsail and, after securing her trysail, continues in the race. . From a good start Valerie was first away and was closely; followed by Silver Fern. F.ndeavour, Flying Cloud and Kandy Kid. Valerie and Kandy Kid made a verv close race, only two seconds separating them at the finish. The race started at 3.30 p.m. The finishing times were:—Kandy Kid (scr), 4h 20m; Valerie (scr), 4h 20m 2s; Silver Fern (21m), ih 20m 325. Endeavour and Flying Cloud retired. The result on corrected times was:—Silver Fern (G Hughes), 1; Kandy Kid (B. Fairs), 2; Valerie (D. Hurley), 3. Mr. A. Hurley was starter and timekeeper. MANUKAU YACHT CLUB The Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat Club held a harbour race for yachts on Saturday afternoon. Twelve boats started, but, owing to a hard north-easterly breeze, only six completed the course.
