BUILDING IN THE RANGES
Sir __l W as deeply interested in Mr. Vaile's suggestions for the reservation of the Waitakere Ranges as a national park. A matter that has been given little consideration is the type or dwelling that residents in these ranges erect. It is usual to build with little consideration to the environment. If, as Mr. Vaile suggests, a responsible committee be set up, would it not be possible that it could act in an advisory capacity for intending builders.-' In California it is customary to erect a type of log cabin which subscribes picturesquely to its bush surroundings. I do not suggest that in the caso of New Zealand one should necessarily use a log or half-log construction, but that at least a shack or residence should be an expression of a bush environment and not suburbia. Iso really worthy scenic reserve will be attained unless something on these lines is attempted. Perhaps an advisory committee of the Institute of Architects would act in this capacity, and encourage would-be residents to add their quota to the beautification of our wonderful heritage. H. E. Brace.
