EXPORT OF PIGS
OPPORTUNITY OVERSEAS MINISTER URGES INCREASE FILLING OF ; ALLOCATION [from oub. own correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday An appeal to farmers to make tho. most of the British Government's offer to increase New Zealand's allocation of porkers and baconers was made by tho Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of .Agriculture, at a meeting of the Matangi branch of tho Farmers' Union last evening. Mr. Martin said that the reports indicated that Now Zealand could produce a class of pig that was equal, if not superior, to that of any other country in the World. He thought farmers should givo more attention to the production of pigs. The position overseas had greatly improved for the New Zealand pig producer. Denmark had made an arrangement with Germany for the supply of butter and pig products and had agreed to take an equivalent value of manufactured goods from Germany. That meant that Denmark would not be operating on the English market to the same extent as hitherto. New Zealand could capitalise the position.
Britain had offered to give New Zealand an allocation of 17,500 tons of baconers, which was a big increase over the 12,500 , tons previously allotted, said the Minister. There was just a doubt whether New Zealand could meet tho demand. Tho Government was cxtremely anxious that the attempt to do so should be made for it did not want the British Government to point to New Zealand's failure to meet the offer.
