TRIAL FOURS RACING
SOME CLOSE FINISHES West End's qualifying trials for the R. L. Stewart trophies produced some remarkably close finishes. In the first heat R. Bigelow and N. Bellamy were fighting out a duel for the lead when had steering caused a collision. Bigolow's crew was first to settle down again, one and a-half lengths separating the crews at the finish. The next heat was also very closely contested, R. Allum gaining half-a-length on L. T. Langham over tho last few strokes. In the final between the crews of Allum and R. Bigelow it was impossible to decide which held the advantage over the greater part of tho course, but in practically the last stroke Allum forged ahead to win by three feet.
Exciting racing was witnessed in both trial fours rowed by the St. George's Club over the week-end. In the contest for the Dingley Memorial Cup on Saturday afternoon, both heats were won by a canvas only, H. Tong's crew winning the final by two lengths. After a closely-contested struggle over the whole distance, W. Hogg's four won the Oliver Scott Cup for maideu oarsmen by a bare foot from P. Keith's crew in a race along the waterfront road course later in the week-end. Double sculls trials for the Foreman Cup were conducted by the Waitemata Boating Club. After defeating P. Connery and C. Cairns in the heat A. Harper and H. Bishop won the final by two lengths from I. Christoif and R. Stables. Both races were won fairly easily.
