FATEFUL MEETING
LEAGUE COMMITTEE SEARCH FOR SETTLEMENT FAILURE OF SANCTIONS By Telegraph—Preßs Association—Copyright (Received April 6, 11.35 p.m.) LONDON, April fi' With Rome believing that a triumphant end to the war is imminent, and Italian newspapers claiming that the Emperor Haili Selassie is fleeing to Dessye while aircraft are bombing and strafing his retreating warriors, the League of Nations Committee of Thirteen will meet at Geneva on Wednesday to seek a settlement. The Committee of Thirteen will meet with the knowledge that the Emperor can no longer effectively resist an enemy employing every device of modern warfare, and, according to the Daily Telegraph's diplomatic correspondent, that important members of the League are not prepared to maintain the existing sanctions against Italy, much less to increase them. The Geneva correspondent of the Times said that correspondence between Senor Madriaga, chairman of the committee, and the Italian Government is recognised at Geneva to convey a plain intimation of the Italian viewpoint that any peace negotiations must take place outside the League as long as sanctions are in force and'the resolution declaring Italy an aggressor is not rescinded.
