WOMAN KILLED
STRUCK BY MOTOR-VAN REMUERA ROAD ACCIDENT CROSSING TO USE TELEPHONE FATAL FRACTURE OF SKULL While crossing Remuera Road to use the telephone at the Remuera post office, Mrs. Gertrude Atkinson, aged 46, was knocked down by a light delivery van and killed shortly before eight o'clock last night. Tho van, driven by Willie Wong, a Chinese butcher, of 379 Manukau Road, Epsom, was travelling toward Newmarket, and Mrs. Atkinson was struck about 90yds. past the corner of Vincent Avenue, in the Remuera shopping centre. Mrs. Atkinson had left her cake and confectionery business at 137 Remuera Road, which is on the southern side, and had almost reached the inward tramlines when she was struck and thrown heavily, the vehicle passing over her. The impact severely damaged the van's radiator grid. Tho woman suffered a fracture of the skull, and Dr. A. McGregor Grant and a St. John ambulance were sent for. However, death occurred almost immediately. A piece of chocolate which Mrs. Atkinson had been carrying was found crushed on the road. With her husband, Mr. Alfred Atkinson, she had been in business in the district for only a short period. An inquest will be opened to-day.
