INTOXICATION CHARGES

MOTORIST AND CYCLIST CANCELLATION OF LICENCES Charged with being intoxicated when in charge of a motor-lorry in Eden Crescent on March 18, George Nelson Sutton, farmer, aged 56, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Accused, who was represented by Mr. Wallace, pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Fox said a constable beard a noise in Eden Crescent and saw the lorry mounting the footpath. Some liquor was found in the lorry. Mr. Wallace said accused had brought the lorry to town with fruit and then went to see friends for the evening. He played cards and had a few drinks and when he went outside, into the colder air the liquor had effect on him. He was a single man, living with his mother and it was most unlikely that the offence would occur again. He lived three miles from a bus route and the lorry was his only means of transit. " He can get a boy to drive it," said the magistrate.

Mr. Wallace: He cannot afford to pay a boy. A fine of £5 was imposed and accused's licence was cancelled for threo months.

Seen by a traffic inspector on March 24 to leave a hotel and ride a motorcycle for about 200 yards in Union Street, and later ride it a further 400 yards after being warned not to mount it, Lloyd Richard Faithful, labourer, aged 36, admitted a charge of being intoxicated when in charge of the machine.

The magistrate imposed a fine of £5 and cancelled accused's driving licence for six months. When accused later represented that he used the motorcvcle to ride 20 miles to work, the magistrate promised to reconsider the cancellation after a report had been received from the police.
