CATHOLIC WOMEN

EVENING RECEPTION A reception in honour of Archbishop O'Shea, of Wellington, and Bishop Brodie, of Christchurch, who are visiting Auckland, was held in the rooms of the Catholic Women's League on Friday evening. There was a large attendance of members, who were received by the president, Mrs. M. Pilling, wearing a frock of brown and beige Chantilly lace. The guests of honour were accompanied by Bishop Liston, Bishop of Auckland. The league chaplain, Monsignor Cahill, was also present. The rooms were charmingly decorated with masses of varied hydrangeas and tall stands of dahlias, while the stage was banked with orange zinnias and asparagus fern. _ Appreciation of the work being done by the league was expressed by Archbishop O'Shea. It was _ particularly gratifying to him, he said, to know that members were also taking P ar p. in outside activities, thus demonstrating the true spirit of Christian social service. In extending thanks for the welcome extended to them. Bishop Brodie said that a branch of the league had been formed in Christchurch. lie hoped in the future to see a branch established in every diocese and parish. "We have come to a time," the bishop said, "when complete organisation is necessary in every section of the Christian community, but m no section is it more necessary than among the Catholic women, whose influence is so far-reaching. There are to-day questions of world-wide importance to be decided, and Catholic women must take the lead." Bishop Liston also congratulated the members t of the League on the good works they undertook and the splendid spirit in which they carried them out. A musical programme was presented. It comprised songs by Miss D. Jenkins. Miss M. Bellamy, the Rev. Father Duffy and Mr. V. Mulgan, recitations by Miss M. Cruickshank and Mr. D. Flood, and pianoforte solos by Miss W. Cooke. Accompaniments were played by Mrs. C. Towsey and Miss W. Cooke. Among those present were:—Mrs. T. Buxton, Mrs. R. Cruickshank, Mrs. D. Tole, Mrs. H. Wright, Mrs. D. P. O'Leary, Mrs. J. J. O'Brien, Mrs. K. Garland, Mrs. W. Kemble, Mrs. C. Stichbury, Mrs. 0. T. Kelly, Mrs. M. Simich, Mrs. N. Main, Miss A. Bryant, Miss D. Ryan, Miss M. Kerr, Miss P. Flynn, Miss M. Lloyd and Miss E. Scruby.
