SHOCKING ACCIDENT

RUN OVER BY TRUCKS WATERSIDER LOSES A LEG [by telegraph OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday A shocking accident occurred at the base of the wharves at Moturoa when William Lowrie, a well-known Maori, aged 79 years, had his left leg completely severed when he was run over by a string of trucks being shunted during the handling of shipping traffic. The accident was not witnessed even by the engine crew. It is assumed that Mr. Lowrie, who was employed on the wharves, attempted to cross the line ai d did not hear the train. He was knocked down and one leg was cut off. Hi' also received injuries to the head. Hi*, condition is serious. A doctor who had been inspecting the ship was on the scene almost immediately and the patient was rushed to the hospital. Mr. Lowrie had worked on the wharves for many years and was regarded as a fine type of Maori.

WHEEL PASSES OYER FOOT

[BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] GORE, Wednesday Severe injuries to the right foot were received by Mr. William Matheson, a railwayman, married, residing in Invercargill, when he was assisting in shunting at Otikeranla this afternoon. Mr. Matheson was riding on the side of a truck when his foot sfipped and a wheel passed over it. He was admitted to hospital.
