SHAKESPEARE'S PLAYS

STILL A LARGE PUBLIC [from our own correspondent] LONDON, Jan. 25 Shakespeare, if he is well presented, still holds his own among playwrights, despite the fact that many managers maintain his name spells failure in the theatre. The outstanding success of tho season in London is "Romeo and Juliet" at the New Theatre. In New York, Miss Katherinc Cornell has recently finished a season of 28 weeks, which included a tour of tho chief cities. In that time the remarkable sum of £116,000 was taken in the box office. This amount, averaging £4143 a week, must be a record for Shakespeare. Altogether in the last 13 months Miss Cornell has played Juliet 232 times. Her last Romeo was Maurice Evans, with Ralph Richardson, who has just returned to London, as Mercutio.
