Feb. 22 A court-martial which had sat in Eecret for 11 weeks sentenced to death Colonel Damian Veltcheff and Commandant Kiril Stantcheff, on a charge of conspiring to overthrow King Boris and the Government. Two others were sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment and eight others to eight years' imprisonment. These included Army officers. Fifteen accused were acquitted. Colonel Veltcheff formerly was "tho power behind the scenes" in Bulgaria. Ho organised the Officers' League, which carried out coups d'etat in 192.5 an'd 1934. The latter coup established the Gheorgliieff regime which suppressed political parties that Colonel Veltcheff declared had become the tools of the Macedonian terrorists. Colonel Veltcheff refused the Premiership, holding that military rule would be inadvisable, but later ho came into conflict with King Boris, resigned from tho Government and was exiled. It is doubtful whether he will be executed owing to his popularity throughout the country.
