OVERSEAS TRADE

BALANCE WITH AMERICA RISE IN EXPORTS LAST YEAR ( DIFFICULT TO HOLD LEVEL Expansion in the total trade with the United States was a feature of j New Zealand's trade returns for the < past year. Exports amounted to ] 1'2,=168,000, in New Zealand currency, < an increase of £1,218,000, and imports ; to £4,362,000, an increase of £815,000. j The total volume of trade was , £6,830,000, compared with £4,797,000 in 1934 and the peak sinee 1930. The following table compares exports ; and imports for the past six years, to- . gather with the balance unfavourable to New Zealand: — Exports Imports Balance ; i'ooo X.Z. <£ooo N.Z. £OOO N.Z 1930 .. 2,117 7,715 -5,593 1931 .. 921 4,057 -3.13G 1 1932 .. 000 3.381 1933 .. 1,189 2.783 -1,594 1934 .. 1,250 3,547 -2,297 1935 . . 2,4fi8 4,302 -1,894 The export trade to the United States was the highest since 1929, when the value was £3,553,000. An analysis , of last year's exports shows the following notable increases:— 1935 1934 £ £ Butter .. .. 220,020 4,693 Moat .. .. 51,107 254 Wool .. .. 301,476 104,673 Tallow . . . . 339,858 39,897 Other principal exports, all of which showed increases were:—Sausage casings, £346,154; rabbitskins, £348,784; pelts, £528,979. Since the war, the highest level of importing from the United States was touched in 1920, when £11,100,000 was recorded. Until the last two or three years, imports remained high in comparison with exports, the average being about £7,000,000 or _ £8,000,000. The peak in exports was £7,456,000 in 1920, but in the following year exports were worth only £2,702,000 and the trade continued at a comparatively low level. The expansion in exports to the United States last year was encouraging, but it would be unwise to hope for much In this direction. The United States was suffering from the effects of drought and from a too-liberal killing of stock in previous years. It required foreign supplies of butter and tallow to tide it over an emergency. There is nothing to suggest that the trade, at the 1935 level, will be permanent. On the other hand, New Zealand is likely to continue to import largely from* the United States and it is probable that imports will expand as economic conditions improve in the Dominion. Vnder present circumstances, the volume of trade should tend again to swing further in United States' favour.
