ANNUAL REGATTAS

FIXTURE AT RANGIRIRI 4 BIG PROGRAMME OF EVENTS INTEREST IN SPEEDBOATS [from our oavx correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Sunday The increasing popularity of tho Waikato River as an aquatic playground was evidenced by large entries and a big attendance of spectators at the Rangiriri regatta yesterday. The varied kinds of sport which the placid reach of tho river fronting the park-like reserve at Rangiriri offers wore liberally catered for, and, with the weather line throughout the day, the regatta was highly successful. Liveliest interest was created by tho outboard speedboat contests. Seven of the fleetest racing craft in the province coming from Hamilton, Auckland, Thames and Matamata, took part. They included Mr. J. C'orbett's Pug, of Thames, Dominion champion, which is capable of a speed of GO miles an hour. The events were on handicap, and placings consequently were shared round among the competitors. The racing was very interesting, great speeds being reached, particularly by Pug, Silver Slipper, Tiger and Volox. Seconds were lost by moro than one of the boats through late starting, the preliminary manoeuvring covering circuits that were too wide. 'ln one case, three seconds' delay in crossing tho starting line lost one boat a place among the first three to finish. The boats were required to compete twice in a race, the handicapping for the second occasion being different from the first. Points were awarded for tho placings under each handicap and the result of the race decided by the points. The winners were: —First race: Fleetun (800 points), 1; Vclox (617), 2; Silver Slipper (556), 3. Second race: Volox (722), 1; Pug (650), 2: Fleetun (625), 3. A consolation race for speedboats and launches resulted in a win for Silver flipper, with Bumble Bee second and Tige* third The two last-named finished so closely together that the judge declared there was only the thickness of a coat of paint between them. On the inshore course, events were also kept moving rapidly. The picturesque Maori canoe races created excitement and humour. For the obstacle events there were three hurdles and the second one proved a hurdle indeed, two out of four boats in the man and wahine event, to negotiate it The winner went over it at tho second 'attempt, and the couple who finished second succeeded at their fourth try. Members of the Hamilton and Hunll.v Canvas Canoe Clubs brought a fleet of their light craft and competed in puddle events. Within the reserve dancing competitions were held, while other attractions were tentsheltered sideshows. The results were as foll0WS:~ AQUATIC EVENTS Wahine Canoe Race, crews of six.— Lady Buck, 1; Onetea, 2. Horse Swimming Race. maiden.—M. Macky's Lady Rangi, 1; A. do Thierry s Duke, 2; H.
