GENERAL W. MITCHELL AMERICAN AIR CHIEF NEW YORK. Feb. '2O The death has occurred of BrigadierGeneral Mitchell, who commanded the United States Air Forces in the Great War. General William Mitchell, who was born in 1879, rose from the- ranks to the high commands he subsequently held. Ho enlisted 111 tbe infantry in 1898 and saw service in the SpanishAmerican War, the Philippine insurrection, Alaska and-Cuba. 011 the Mexican border and finally in the Great War, gaining many American, British and foreign decorations. He was commander of the American Air Forces in 1917 and 1918 and later was director of military aviation.
