A- 4 distinct change is apparent to-day. Auckland is coming into line with England, Australia and our own South Island: countries in which the predominance of brick structures is accepted as a matter of course. f This city provides such a perfect setting for a home of lasting beauty that it was logical that this change would come about. The warmth and van-coloured beauty of brick is particularly suited to our sunny climate and to the bright landscape of our garden homes. The flexibility of this material is a further quality of major importance; brick provides a medium of expression that is most adaptable to modern home design. It is clear that the delayed acceptance of brick in Auckland was due, not to lack of appreciation of its qualities as a building material, but to the high cost and low quality of the material available. A brick home was reluctantly viewed as something of a luxury. Within a comparatively short period the obstacles of price and quality have been entirely removed. Brick prices have reached a new low level; many new types have been successfully introduced, and highgrade bricks that meet every modern building need in form, texture and colour are now within the reach of every home builder. As a result, the local brick market is in a buoyant state and buyers are awake to the latest trends in brick home design. This was clearly demonstrated by the immediate success that attended the recent introduction of the cottage brick, which is smaller and lighter than the standard size brick, but strong in texture and rich in colour. Another new type of brick, the partition brick, has been equally well received. Possessing a large face area, it has introduced substantial economies in the construction of interior walls and has also been employed with great effect in basements and foundations where an external appearance of unusual strength was desired. In addition, this brick soon proved to be the cheapest form of permanent garage material available. The small American facing brick is another example of the " new deal" that operates to-day.' Until recently this brick was quite beyond the means of the average home builder. Modern manufacturing methods have cut the former price in half and brought it within the reach "of all. The use of the new slotted brick automatically ensures a locked joint in every mortar bed. Where earthquake-resisting properties are necessary, steel reinforcement of slotted bricks provides an exceptional degree of safety at little additional cost. A definite swing to brick has been apparent in Auckland for some time and- the factors touched upon in this article make clear the causes that have brought about'this change in local opinion.
