captain d. Mcdonald — RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED After serving for 25 years with the Union Steam Ship Company Zealand, Ltd., for whom he has held command of no fewer than 24 steamers, Captain Donald McDonald is retiring, from the sea. During his service wit the company Captain McDonald received the King's Silver Medal for ga - lantry. - ?sr The medal was awarded for heroic rescue work on board the Tahiti at Sail Francisco in 1922 when some of t. e crew were overcome by fumes r cyanide used for fumigating one or ship's holds. Two deaths resulted. Born at Stornoway, Outer Hebrides. Scotland, 51 years ago, Captain * Donald served his time in various sailing ships and steamers as ordinary able seaman before joining the se of the Union Steam Ship Company « third officer of the Komata on Marc. 27, 1911. He was appointed master, o November 2, 1923, his first com . being the Kakapo. It is understoo Captain McDonald intends to reside i Auckland, where he will devote him.self to various business interests.
