OBITUARY

MR. A. H. ARTHUR The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr. Alfred Hurley Arthur, of Hawera, who was well known in Taranaki, where he was in business for very many years. About 1890 he established a furnishing warehouse bearing his name. Mr. Arthur was living in Auckland temporarily for health reasons. In his earlier years he took a great interest, in the affairs of the Hawera district. He was a Freemason and a member of the Hawera Bdwling Club. He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter.

MR. JAMES A. HANNAH [nv TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLING TON. Thursday The death has occurred of Mr. James Alexander Hannah, after a long illness. Mr. Hannah was the eldest son of the late Mr. R. Hannah and his life's work has been that of assisting his father build up the present large organisation of R. Hannah and Company, Limited. Mr. Hannah resided in "Wellington practically the whole of his life, but for the last 12 months, after a health trip to Switzerland, he had lived in retirement at Eastbourne. Ho is survived by a son and a daughter. MRS. ANNIE C. WIGLEY [nv TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] TIMARU, Thursday The death has occurred of Mr. Annie Caroline Wigley, widow of the late Hon. T. H. Wigley, who was a member of the Legislative Council for more than 20 years. Horn in England 84 years ago, Mrs. Wigley came to New Zealand with her parents in 1873. She married Mr. Wigley in 1879 and went to reside on the Opuha estate, Raincliff, South Canterbury. After the death of her husband she continued to manage the estate until 190S, when she removed to Timaru. Mrs. Wigley is survived by two sons and one daughter, Mrs. A. Otway, of Wellington. MRS. L. J. ROWLANDS [from OCR OWN correspondent] WHA XG A R KI. Tli ursd a y The death has occurred of Mrs. Levinia Johnson Rowlands at the age of (5(5 years. Mrs. Rowlands was born at Silverdale, North Staffordshire, England, being the second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Cotterill. When 15 years of age she came to New Zealand with her parents, landing at Auckland from the Ruapehu on December 10, 1885. After residing in Auckland the family moved to Mania, where Mr. Cotterill took up farming. On October 18, ISBB, deceased married the late Mr. Charles E. Rowlands, whose father was an early schoolteacher in the Waipu district and the lirst Waipu riding member of the Whangarei County Council. With her husband and family Mrs. Rowlands lived at Hikurangi, moving in 1915 to Onerahi, where for many years Mr. Rowlands was an employee of Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement, Limited. He died in ]928. Mrs. Rowlands was an active social worker and during th« j Great War she took a leading part in organising patriotic affairs. She is survived by fire sons, and two daughters. There are 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
