SCHOOL JUBILEE
PUKERIMU-KAIPAKI OLD PUPILS' PICNIC TO-DAY [FROM OTJR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON, Thursday The 60th anniversary of the opening of the Pukerimu School will be observed to-morrow, when a large gathering of former pupils of the school will meet at a picnic that has been organised. Pukerimu lies to the south-west of Cambridge, and it was first peopled by soldiers in 1864. Land was taken up in 1866, Messrs. Robert Fisher and Joseph Gane being among the original settlers. Farms occupied by Messrs. Scott, Willoughby, Fisher and Atkinson are still held by relatives of the original settlers. A gift of land was made by Mr. R. Fisher, and the first school in the district was opened on February 23, 1876. This structure stood for 46 years, and was replaced by what is now known as the Kaipaki District School, which occupies a different site. Among the early pupils was Sir James Parr, now High Commissioner for New Zealand in London. Mr. D. Caley was elected the first chairman and Mr. J. Gane the first secretary. Mr. R. Ollby was the first teacher. Mr. Alan Fisher is the present chairman of the committee, and Mr. P. Costello the senior teacher..
