Mr. ft. G. Milligan returned from the South by the limited express yesterday. Mr. M. M. McCallum arrived from ' : Wellington yesterday morning by the limited, express. Mr. G. R. Hutchinson left for Wellington on a business trip by yesterday afternoon's train.

Mr. F. W. Doidge will leave by the Mariposa to-day on a visit to Sydney and Melbourne. He will be away for a month.

Mr. T. N. Smallwood, joint managing director of the Mortgage Corporation of New Zealand, arrived from Wellington by train yesterday.

Dr. E. H. Clarke, senior house surgeon at the Wanganui Hospital, has been appointed assistant medical officer at the Nelson Hospital.

Dr. S. Kenneth Phillips left for Wellington yesterday to attend a. meeting of the Broadcasting Board. He will return to Auckland to-morrow.

The Rev. D. C. Alley, Methodist minister at Wairoa, has been appointed by the Methodist conference to the mission field in the Solomon Islands. He will leave in April.

Sir. F. H. Guinness, superintendent of mails at. the General Post Office, Wellington, is retiring after 40 years' service in the Post and Telegraph Ds= partment. He will reside in Auckland.

The Rev. Father Basil B?ake, S.M., of St. Bede's College, Christchurch, has been selected to go to Oxford to further his studies. Father Blake wa.s appointed to the staff of St. Bede's in 1929. He will leave New Zealand in August.

The Rev. C. G. Scrimgeour, director of the Friendly Road radio station, returned from Wellington by train yesterday and, accompanied by Mrs. Scrimgeour, will leave for Sydney to-day by the Mariposa. He will return in s month.

Mr. J. W. Yarnall. chairman of the City Council Library Committee, is still in hospital and seriously ill. At the meeting of the City Council last night Mr, Yarnall was granted extended leave *and the council decided to send a letter expressing the hope that Mr. Yarnall would soon make a good recovery.

I)r. A. T. Howie, who has been in charge of the New Zealand Presbyterian Mission hospital at Kong Chuen, Canton, for the past four years, hag been ordered to return to New Zealand immediately on account of his health. With Mrs. Howie he will leave at once and return by easy stages.

Mr. A. B. Swift, vice-president of Swift and Company, Chicago, -who it visiting New Zealand, returned to Auckland yesterday and is at the Grand Hotel. He is accompanied by Mrs. Swift. With him also is Mr. D. G. Girton, managing director of the company in London, and Mrs. Girton. They will leave for Australia to-day by the Mariposa.
