AGROUND IN FOG

ENGLISH LUXURY LINER HOLE TORN IN BOWS THRILL FOR PASSENGERS (Received February 17, 9.45 p.m.) LONDON. Feb. 17 The Daily Mall states that 338 passengers who were returning home by the Union-Castle luxury liner Winchester Castle had an unexpected thrill when in the darkness of a dense fog and amid rain squalls, she ran ashore on rocks off Portland. The captain sent out distress signals, and the destroyer Winchelsea, a lifeboat and tugs hurried to the rescue. The Winchester Castle three hours later wrenched herself free, a jagged hole being torn in her bows. She steamed slowly stern first, escorted by the destroyer and the tugs to Weymouth.
