RAGWORT ERADICATION
Sir, —The problem of ragwort control is growing more and more serious. Such partial aids as sodium-chlorate and sheep have not solved the problem, and in spite of much work done in these directions the pest is not only spreading rapidly, but even where cleared, it is not eradicated. The only real solution is by means of a parasite, the ragwort" seed-fly The Cawthrori Institute has been doing splendid work and has imported relatively small quantities of the seed-flv, but it is hampered for want of funds from doing more in this direction. I suggest that the dairy companies should invite their suppliers to contribute one penny per cow, the accumulated funds to be donated to the Cawthron Institute for the purpose of importing and breeding in wholesale numbers this seed-flv. By the distribution of the seed-flv I am firmly convinced that ragwort would not only be controlled, but finally eradicated. If, on the other hand, the dairy companies do not do something very soon, it will mean that more and more dairy farmers will bo. compelled to abandon their holdings. Otorohanga. J. Williamson.
