UNIVERSITY WINDOWS
RUSTING OF FRAMES HIGH COST OF REPAINTING Tho steel frames of the many windows at Auckland University College have given it great deal of trouble in the past through rufeting, and the question of repainting them occupied tho attention of members of the college council for some time yesterday. Tho president, 'Mr. T. U. Wells, said tho troublo was that the frames rusted, and tho expansion of the steel in rusting pushed out the putty, and in some cases cracked tho glass. Last year tho frames of 216 windows in tho science department had been repainted at a cost of £550, but tho repainting of the frames in tho arts department would be a considerably larger work, and tho registrar had suggested that ,it should be done by day labour. Tho work would take 12 months, and would involve scraping the frames, removing tho rust, and then painting the steel with oil and a good quality special paint. It was estimated that tho work would cost £3OO for tho 406 windows. Mr. S. Irwiu Crookes said the troublo was general in Auckland, and ho suggested that additional information should bo obtained on tho subject. Tho matter was deferred for a month, and Professor I'. W. Burbidge and Mr. Crookes wore asked to obtain the information.
