Science and industry have produced the modern, compact refrigerator, which, among other things, has obviated the necessity of cellars. To-day, the domestic chimney is as much a portable unit as the refrigerator or the radio set. The unique properties of pumice-ferro-concrete have enabled manufacturers to construct an article of a few easily-handled and easily-assembled parts. This article serves all the purposes of the oldfashioned chimney and has advantages hitherto unattainable. For instance, the portable pumice-ferro-concrete chimney occupies less space. It is lighter in weight. Supplied with a special fireproof slab, it requires no foundation other than an ordinary floor. It is completely fire-resisting, due to the insulating value of pumice. It is earthquake-proof to a high degree and can easily be made absolutely so in districts where this is necessary. It is as permanent as Arapuni Dam (the dam, incidently, is largely constructed of pre-cast concrete units).
