MAORI CHIEF'S DEATH
TANGI AT WHATAWHATA [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday The death occurred at Whatawhata yesterday of a noted Maori chief, Houkoura Pe Awaipaia, at the age of 87 years. Houkoura was a grandson of a chief who had helped the early missionaries to establish Christianity in the Waikato, and in its cause his grandfather frequently risked his life in spreading Christian teaching throughout the North Island. Houkoura's death is greatly deplored by the Maoris of the Waikato, and a large tangi is being held at Whatawhata.
