ROWING EVENTS

RAINGER CUPS CONTEST TRIAL FOURS POSTPONED UNFAVOURABLE CONDITIONS Th 6 unpromising weather early on Saturday afternoon caused the postponement of the trial fours rowing contests which had been arranged by both the Waitemata and St. George's Clubs. For the same reason, no entries were forthcoming in the annual contest for the Nixon Cup', and officials of the Tamaki Yacht Club, under .whose control the race was to have been held, decided to postpone the event until March 28. $ More favourable conditions prevailed in St. Mary's Bay, where the Weist End Club took advantage of the shelter provided by the breakwater to row trial fours for the Rainger Cups.

GOOD WATER CONDITIONS WEST END CLUB'S EVENT In spite of continuous showers of rain, good water conditions wero experienced in St. Mary's Bay, whoro the West End Club held its annual trial fours contest for the Rainger Cups. The long course from the oil tanks to the Shelly Beach baths was used, and in the heats the conditions could not have been bettor. In tho final, however, crews had to contend with a light jobble, which became rougher as the finishing line was approached. Four crews entered, the race being run off in two beats and a final. Starting was by mutual consent, and the races were judged by club officials. In tho first heat the crews were:—W. Parnell (stroke), L. Langham, R. Bigelow, M. G. McNeil; W. Burrell (stroke), E. J. G. Hotham, E'. O'Mohoney, J. Toye. Parnell was first to gain an advantage, and, after half the course had been covered 05 fairly even terms, ho giaduully drew away to win by threo lengths. The crews in the second heat were:— L. Lambie (stroke), J. D. Craies, J. Howe, F. Jennings; R Allum (stroke), E. Mcpherson, S. Bigelow, J. Kennedy. Allum jumped into the lead it the start, but Lambie was only half a canvas behind him as the crews settled into a long, steady swing for the race across the bay. Allum maintained his lead, but his opponent was rowing stroke for stroke as they quickened up for tho sprint. However, Lambie's crew missed a stroke, and Allum once more went ahead to win by a length., Getting away to a splendid start in the final, the crows of Parnell and Allum were even over tho first quarter of a mile. The first-named was striking a faster stroke, however, and he was a length in the lead as the crews passed the gap. At this stage Allum made a valiant effort to head the leaders, but Parnell called on for more weight, and drew away to win comfortably by two lengths.
