ROYAL SQUADRON EVENTS MACKY MEMORIAL TROPHY SUCCESS OF THE lORANGI The harbour races for keel yachts and one for class M (18-footers) were held by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron on Saturday afternoon. The most important event was the annual contest for the Macky Memorial Trophy for first division yachts. The winner was, lorangi, owned by Mr. G. Mackenzie. Waiomo, owned by Mr. N. C. Mains, accounted for the race for second division yachts, and Mr. M. K. Bra/En's KoCukti won the raco for third divison yachts. In the contest for class M the winner was Messrs. Goodfellow and Chamberlain's Manu. All races started and finished off King's .Wharf. A light south-easterly wind, accompanied by rain, prevailed in the early part of the afternoon, but later in the day the wind freshened and Ariki, Windward and Mahaki carried uway vurioua sails, causing them to retire. MACKY MEMORIAL TROPHY Tho competitors in the race for this wellknown trophy, which was decided under the measurement rule, were the A claBS boats Ngatoa, lorangi, Rawene, Tawera and Ariki. The Bta-t was a good one, Ngatoa crossing the lino first, closely followed by lorangi, Tawera and Rawene, with Ariki last. All the boats, with the exception of Ngatoa, started at the lee end of the line, and Ngatoa, which kept well up to windward, was soon iji the lead on the close haul down (he harbour. After making a short board on starboard, lorangi threw round on port and, having got well over on the southern side of the harbour, went back on starboard. The other boats meanwhile kept on tho northern shore and did not do as well as lorangi. Off Hobson Bay lorangi headed Ngatoa and was now the leading boat. Both Rawene and Ariki passed Tawera and, approaching Bean Rock Lighthouse, the wind blew so hard that Ngatoa put in two reefs. Near Rangitoto Wharf Ariki carried away the jib and, no sooner had she replaced it, than the second one ako blew out. Ariki then withdrew and returned to her moorings. lorangi was now well in the lead with Rawene, Tawera and Ngatoa racing in that order. Making the turn at the red buoy off Motuihi for the run back to King's Wharf lorangi wits 'a little over 4m ahead of Rawene, which had a good lead from Tawera and Ngatoa. lorangi improved her position on the run home and Tawera and Raweno drew away from Ngatoa. The race started at 2.30 p.m. The finishing times were:—lorangi (4m 3s), 4h 32m 565; Rawene (9m 3s), 4h 42m 8s; Tawera (4m 445), 4h 49m 365; Ngatoa (8m lis), 4h 57m 17s; Ariki (scr). retired. The result on corrected times was:— lorangi, 1; Raweue, 2; Tawera, 3. SECOND DIVISION RACE The race for the second division, comprising A and B class yachts, brought out eight competitors. Ladye Wilma crossed the line at gunfire, and was closely followed by Victory, Altair, Waiomo, Windward. Kotiri and Moana. Little Jim was lm 30s late. All stood on starboard tack except Kotiri. which went off on port, and later threw round on the opposite tack. The new boat Waiomo sailed exceptionally well on the beat down the harbour and was in the lead before Devonport Wharf was reached. Victory went into second place and a good race was fought out between Waiomo and Victory for first position, the last-named overhauling Waiomo at Bean Rock Lighthouse. Rounding the Motuihi buoy Victory wbb 11m in front of Waiomo. Ladye Wilma was third round. Moana fourth, and Little "Jim fifth. Then followed Altair and Kotiri. Windward tore her jib and retired. The race started at 2.20 p.m. The finishing times were:—Victoiy (sm), 4h 42m 9s; Waiomo (10m), 4h 44m 595; Moana (6m). 4h 47m 30s; Little Jim (7m). 4h 48m 51s; Ladye Wilma (14m), 4h 49m 50s; Altair (20m), 4h 59m 7s; Kotiri (16m), 5h 3m 30s. The result nn corrected times was:— Waiomo, 1; Ladye Wilma, 2; Victory, 8. THIRD DIVISION CLASS In the race for third division yachts, class C, Mahaki was first away. lona and Kotuku went over together. Peri being 2m late. Mahaki, holding well up to windward, did better than the other boats in the early stages but, when the wind freshened, she lost her and lator carried away her Kotuku took charge and, sailing well in the fresh breeze, led the fleet, home. The race started at 2.10 p.m. The finishing times were:—Kotuku (4m), 5h lm 445; lona (lm), 5h 8m 255; Peri (15m), 5h 15m 12s. Mahaki (scr) retired. result on corrected times was:— Kotuku, 1; Peri, 2; lona, 3. RACE FOR M CLASS There were five competitors in the race for M class. Manene was first over the line and was closely followed by Mawhiti. Manu, Maroro and Manaia. Maroro went into the lead, but was soon passed by Manu, which led on both rounds of the course. At the- completion of the first round Manu was lm 31s ahead of Maroro. which was lis in front of Manene. Mawhiti and Manaia followed over three minutes' later. It) the second round Manene passed Maroro. The race started at 2.45 p.m. The finishing times were:—Manu (ser), 4h 30m 30s; Manone (scr). 4h 31m 4s; Maroro (3m 80s). 4h 30m 48s; Manaia (lrii). 4h 38m 51s; Mawhiti (2m 30s), 4h 39m 3s. The result on corrected times was:— Manu, 1; Manene. 2; Maroro. 3.
