MAN SEEN ON ROOF
VAIN SEARCH FOLLOWS LARGE POLICE PARTY USED INCIDENT IN NEWTON A vain search for a man who was seen on the roof of one of a block of buildings in Knrangahapo Road, near Belgium Street, Newton, was made for more than an hour last night by a large party of detectives and members of the uniform branch of the police. Many of the shops in the block were searched, and the police made a thorough examination of the area behind the block, without finding any trace of the man. The intruder was noticed by the tenant of one of the shops, a Chinese, who stated later that 110 had seen a man standing on the roof, outlined against the sky. It was not until some time later, about ten o'clock, however, that ho advised the constable on the beat, who communicated with headquarters. Police cars were used to convey a party from the central station to Karangahape Itoad, and the block was surrounded, while the search was carried out. Although some of the shops were not examined, as they had been closed for the night and there was no means of gaining entry, the whole block was searched as carefully as possible. One of the tenants, however, said that earlier in the evening he had heard somebody moving upstairs, but had not investigated. A similar report that resulted in a fruitless search was received by the police on the night of January 20. A building in Hobson Street, City, was thoroughly combed, but a man who had been seen on the roof was not located.
