AGED NATIVE'S DEATH
LARGE TANGI ARRANGED [FROM OUR OWN CORRKSPONnKNT] WAIUKU, Friday The death occurred at Otaua to-day of John Noblt?, a: highly respected member of the Ngati Mahanga tribe, at the ago of 86. Mr. Noble was a son of a European father and a chieftainess of the tribe to which he himself belonged. He was born at Ilaglan. When about 18 years of ago he was assisting surveyors on Pirongiu Mountain when the party was attacked by hostile Maoris. Mr. Noble was mistaken for a European and was wounded. About 50 years ago Mr. Noble took up a farm at Otaua, where he had resided since. He married a native of the district, Maliora Watapekoi, a chieftainess of the Ngati Tahinga tribe. He is survived by his wife, now aged about 70, six sons and five daughters. There are 36 grandchildren. A large tangi has been arranged and will start to-morrow. Large numbers of Maoris are expected. The burial will take place on Monday.
