OBSTRUCTION BY WILLOWS RESPONSIBILITY FOR CLEARING [from our own corrksvondknt] WHANGAREI, Friday A reply to its representations regarding the clearance of willows from the Mangakahia River was received by the Whangarei County Council to-day from the Minister of Publio Works, Hon. R. Semple. " The extent to which the Mangakahia River Hoods is, of course, appreciated," the Minister stated, "and it is realised that the menace of willows is a serious one, and if not controlled will in time have a grave effect

on the valley. 1 have to point out, however, that the duty of keeping rivers and streams clear of noxious growth is principally one for the area concerned and the local authority in which the area is situated. It, therefore, seems necessary that the work should be undertaken or promoted by the county council, or, if thought advisable, by a rivers board or a drainage board set up lor the purpose.

"The question as to what degree of assistance the Government could give would receive careful consideration when it was seen that adequate steps in the matter were being taken by the district or by the local authority concorned," Mr. Semplo wrote.

The council deferred discussion of the matter until its next meeting owing to the absence of Mr. T. N. Blake, member for the Mangakahia Riding.
