SOUTHLAND EXCELS
WHAT IS THE REASON? A correspondent writes: "Why is it that Southland, at the London Dairy Show, took all the prizes for cheese and no other province in New Zealand ■won a single prize or recommendation? Why was it that at the Southland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Association show farmers from North Canterbury and South Canterbury said: ' If I were a young man, Southland is the one place in New Zealand for which I would make a bee-line?' Why is it that Southland works open a few weeks beforo Christmas, when years ago they did not open until the middle of February? Why is it that years ago Poverty Bay lambs weighed 361b. to 401b. by December 6, and that in the year 1933 the weight was reduced to 321b. to 3Glb.. and to-day wo read that lambs on the flats are at a standstill, and only two years ago the lambs would not fatten/Why is it that visitors from Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Canterbury and Otago ali say that the stock shown at the Southland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral' Association was better than any stock shown in any other show in New Zealand? Why is it that the Southland farmers are deadly hostile to Hawke's Bay rye and other perennial seeds and will not sow them? Surely it is the duty of the New Zealand agrostologist to enlighten the public on such important questions."
