FIRST DAY'S EVENTS

FIELDS FOR WEDNESDAY WELLINGTON CUP CONTEST TWENTY HORSES ENGAGED FOURTEEN LEFT IN TELEGRAPH [BT TELEGRAM—rRF-SS association] ELLINGTON, Tuesday Following are the acceptances for tho first, day. of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting, to bo held at Trentham on January 22, 24. and 23:

TRENTHAM GOSSIP CUDDLE WITHOUT RIDER L. J. ELLIS FOR KINNOULL [by TELEGRAPH OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Tuesday L. J. Ellis will ride Kinnoull in the Wellington Cup. He has advised the connections of Cuddle to this effect, although a Timgru report says that while Kinnoull has paid up in the Cup a definite decision regarding his starting will not be made until later. However, it must be fairly definite for Ellis to forgo a ride on Cuddle. When Ellis informed Cuddle's party of his inability to take the mount on the mare an effort was 'made to secure the services of R. Reed, but the latter is engaged to ride Grand Jury. The mount will remain- vacant in the meantime and there should be no difficulty in securing the services of a competent rider, as there is a limited number in the Cup over light weights. It is the intention of J. W. Lowe to start both Red Sun and Sunee in the Wellington Cup. Red Sun will be ridden by the southern lieht-weight C. T. Wilson and Sunee will again have the services of G. Tattersall. Steady rain last night and to-day has softened the tracks at Trentharn and they will be in excellent order for the meeting provided the weather clears. There are no visiting horses ai Trentham yet and, as usual, the bulk of the outside contingent is not expected until near the eve of the meetCuddle has resumed strong work again and a mile on Saturday was followed by another this morning. She does not do exceptionally fast work on the tracks, but she is in her usual good order. GAY BRONEY FOR TRENTHAM DEPARTURE TO-DAY -Mr. J. IX Romp leaves for Trentham to-day with the Wellington Cup candidate Gay Broney. In all his callops since the summer meeting Gay Broney has performed in good stvle. The easv tracks have enabled his owner to give him plenty of solid work without causing him to go sore and he should strip fit for his Wellington engagements. , MELBOURNE RACING IDOL SHADOW KING TO RETIRE MELBOURNE, Jan. 14 Shadow King, now in his 10th year, and the idol of the Melbourne racing public, is to iio retired.
