SUM OF £2192 INVOLVED COMPANY AGENT REMANDED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] • CHKISTCHURCH, Saturday A s;eries of defalcations was admitted in the Police Court this morning by Henry Alan Morray Smith, aged 28, a company agent, employed by the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company at Rakaia. The amount involved was £2192. Mr. F. Reid, S.M., remanded Smith until January 14. Chiief-Detective Dunlop said Smith had diverted a cheque in payment for some sheep to his own use. In another instance a fictitious purchase of ryegrass on behalf of the company had resulted in Smith collecting cash. He had also failed to pay wages tax on account of farmers whose business he had been handling. Mr. Young, counsel for Smith, said accused found that his salary of £265 a year did not cover the expenses involved in entertaining numerous clients. Smith had borrowed petty Cash and had found it impossible to repay. One client was so pleased with Smith's business ability that he had offered to make full restitution.
