OBITUARY

MR. R. H. KEATING ! [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] THAMES, Saturday The death has occurred at his home in Thames of Mr. Roland Howard Keating, at the age of 54. Mr. Keating was born and educated in Thames and, as a youth, entered the service of the Railway Department. He saw service in the South African War, and, returning to Thames, resumed his occupation again. Later he went to reside in Wellington and returned to Thames four years ago. At one period he played for the City Football Club and represented' Thames in major matches. He is survived by his wife. MRS. H. CUTFORTH [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHAXGAREI. Saturday The death has occurred of Mrs. Heriot Cutforth, aged 65, the wife of Mr. Frank Cutforth, one of Whangarei's be6t-known residents. Mrs. Cutforth, who had been in ill-health for some time, was a resident of Newmarket in her childhood, being the "daughter of the late Mr. Elliott, who was foreman of the railway workshops. She was a prominent social worker, and was a board member of tho Y.W.C.A. She is survived by her husband and three step-children. MR. EDWARD LONG [by telegraph—own correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH. Sunday The death of Mr. Edward Long, chairman of the Waimate West County Council and prominent in Tararmki public life for many years, occurred at New Plymouth yesterday after an illness of long duration. Mr. Long visited America a few years ago for treatment and returned improved in health, but again became ill. He was a successful farmer, and his family was very well known on tho Waimate Plains. MRS. S. A. SMITH The death has occurred in Auckland of another early colonist, Mrs. S. A. Smith, at the age of 84 yfcars. She arrived in New Zealand in 1864 as a girl after a four months' voyage on the sailing ship Armstrong (Captain Armstrong). Mrs. Smith spent most of her early life at Thames, her father, the late Mr. Samuel Enscr, being a mining engineer and proprietor. With her husband, the late Mr. Alexander Smith, a well-known Auckland elocutionist, who predeceased her by nine years, she took prominent parts in amateur dramatic work, mostly for charitable purposes. The funeral took place at O'Neill's Point cemetery on Wednesday. She is survived by six children.
