WOMAN SENATOR
Mrs. Howard T. Fallis holds the distinction of being; the second woman member of the Canadian Senate, her name having appeared on the list of 10 Senators recently nominated by the Prime Minister. Mrs. Howard T. Fallis, so Canadian newspapers tell us, is a farmer's wife who has known the rigours of life oil a prairie farm and combines the ability of performing most of the heavy duties of farm life with that of an eloquent platform speaker. It will be remembered that in 1930, shortly after it had been decided by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council that Canadian women were "Persons" and entitled to the same prerogatives as men in respect to Government, Mrs. Cairine Wilson was appointed to the Senate, where she took her seat as the first woman member. But she was not Canada's first woman Parliamentarian, as long before that, in 1921, Miss Agnes Macphail. a farmer's daughter and school teacher, was elected to the House of Commons as the first of her sex to take a seat in the Dominion Parliament; she has been returned at every general election since.
