RUNNING DESCRIBED

DOUBLE GREAT'S VICTOEY

A FINE performance; MARIE CELESTE GOES FAST.' [BY TBLEGHAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday A fast track was responsible for some fine performances at the New Brighton meeting to-day. The three-year-old Double Great registered 3.19 for a mile and a-lialf —a great* trial in .winning the Saltaire Handicap, while Marie Celeste registered 2.10 3-5 in winning the Electric Handicap. ' A hot 'favourite in Royal Romance was never seriously troubled to win the Trial Handicap, which was a poor race. After half a milo had been covered, Royal Romance and Royal Parrish cleared away from the rest, and Royal Romance won very easily. Bellerina, an outsider, was in third place and the others well back. The winner's record is one first and two seconds in three starts. The American stallion Gallant Knight, coupled with Dual, Rollalong and Tapdancer, was not seriously troubled to win the Improvers' Handicap. He was making hia first appearance. Starting well, he was soon in a handy position. Three furlongs from home he left the field and, though Zest made a brave challenge, she had no chance with the ■winner, who won in taking style.. Ace Pot, always well placed, paid a remarkably good price for third. He should win shortly,, as should Glorietta and King's Drive. Substantial Dividend The Mace Memorial Handicap provided a real surprise. Gunmetal, who had failed last week at Forbury Park and had not been regarded as a 6tayer, won and paid a dividend of more than four-fifths of a century on the win machine. Big Author was a warm favourite, and while he lost a little ground at the start, he was afforded every chance,.- Dollie> Derby set out to make the pace with.- Big Author,' Gunmetal, Betty Wrack and Young Travis following, and when the last two furlongs were commenced the order was practically unchanged. , < At this stage Dollie Derby had had enough'and Big Author faded out. In the run home, Gunmetal secured a good run on the rails and stalled off a strong challenge from Chechahco, who in turn was beaten by the fast-finishing Tangatu. The winner's performance was a good one, but Big Author was plainly not at his best, and Tangatu would have been troublesome with any luck in the running. j Casanova was the favourite .for the Wainoni Handicap, qndjust gained the verdict in a hard finish. The leaders almost throughout were Lady Hannah, Prince Roydon, Trireme and Trinidad. At the four furlongs post Casanova was a good way back, and Loretta was interfered with. Tangatu's Second Start Casanova put in a great run at this stage, and half-way down the straight he was in- front. At the finish, however, he was all in, and .both Loretta and Prince Roydon were going hotter. It was a fine effort, for a three-year-old. Carrageen was in the firing line a furlong from home, and looks an early winner, Harvest Time's, running was instructive.!; After hia forward running in the big rape Tangatu was given a great chance in the Bowhill Handicap. He struck the front at the start, and led all the way. He was full of running the finish and stalled off a hard challenge by Golden Cross. Golden Cross, at no time a good finisher, went a'fine .race. Aristotle was always - prominent* and paid a good dividend for third' place, but the, favourite, Grand Mogul, after a quick beginning, stumbled and lost 'ground. He afterwards failed to run on. Sylvia Sydney went.a solid race, but Subsidy lost his chance at the 6tart, i and Wise Guy performed in disappointing fashion. < t Double Great at His Best ' The New Zealand Derby winner Double Great provided the tit-bit of the afternoon .when he won the Saltaire Handicap in 3.19 from a 3.35 mark. He made a good beginning and followed Colonel Bogey, Portlight and Mystery Yet to the straight entrance. Then he came away from his field, pacing in his best style, and held off Doris Derby, who put in a sensational run oVer the last furlong. Double Great won in the manner»of a champion for bis ago, although in another few strides Doris Derby would have been in front. Jean Drusus, always well' placed, surprised by her forward running, and Impostor, Mystery Yet and Irish .Peach were prominent throughout; , ' i., Another stirring finish was witnessed in the! Handicap. In the straight the field closed up and Silk Coat and Renegade, who got a run oil the rails, engaged in a battling .finish. Silk Coat just won after, her best performance. Isabel Patcji broke in the straight, and . Sister. Mary and Modern Lady failed- to stay the journey. .All' Sunshine was made favourite for the Electric Handicap, but she was never dangerous. Shortly after the start Marie Celeste took the Jead, and 6lie was in front for the rest of the journey. She easily held off Great Thought in the run.to the post, with Princess Thea in third place and the rest of the field strung out half the length of the straight.
