NAVY LEAGUE BALL

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION MANY VISITORS PRESENT [by telegraph—OWN courespondent] WELLINGTON. .Tuesday St. Francis' Hall, Wellington, was gay with naval ensigns, Hags and bunting last night, when a dance, organised by the Wellington branch of the Navy League, was given in honour of Commodore the Hon. E. R. Drummond, Commodore Commanding the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, and the Lady Evelyn Drummond. There was an excellent attendance, the guests including officers from H.M.S. Dnnedin, representatives of the Navy Office, members of the Navy League and leading citizens. The decorations were particularly effective, the bright colours lending an air of extreme cheeriness to the proceedings. As they entered the ballroom the- guests passed under an archway fashioned from naval ensigns. On the stage, with its ebony backcloth and its cardinal hangings, were masses of white arum lilies arranged in bowls and jardinieres, their deep green leaves showing to advantage against the paleness of the flowers. In the centre hung the Navy League's standard with festoons of bunting on either side, while in front of the gallery was hung a large Union Jack. Particularly attractive was the upstairs lounge, which was furnished with chairs, tables and settees. Bowls of roses, Iceland poppies and ranunculi gave a bright touch of colour. A claret cup bar was a feature of this lounge and a sit-down supper was served in the supper room. A novelty was a largo mirror ball, which threw countless lights on the dancers as they moved about the floor. The effect was most intriguing when coloured lights were reflected from its shining surface.

The guests were received by Sir James Grose, president of the Wellington branch of the Navy League, Mrs. Leonard Tripp, president of the ladies' auxiliary, and Miss Irene Edwin, president of the junior branch. In addition to Commodore Drummond and the Lady Evel.vn Drummond there were present Commander and Mrs. B. Willett, Pay-master-Commander H. K. Totton, Engineer-Commander and Mrs. W. H. Taylor-You ng, Lieuton ant-Commander and Mrs. D. H. Seeker, LieutenantCommander and Mrs. L. Gowland, Lieutenant-Commander G. M. F. Fuller, Lieutenant T. H. Garwood, SubLieutenant D. G.
