The proposal to reduce rates of duty on various articles, and also to reduce nativa taxation was made by the Governor, Sir Murchison Fletcher, in his address to the Council, when he referred to tho very satisfactory state of the colony's financial position. It is proposed to reduce' the duty on beer as follows:—Beer, bottled, 4s a gallon preferential rate to 2s Gd a gallon; general rate, from 6s to 4s 6d a gallon. Beer, cask, 3s a gallon preferential rate, to 2s a gallon; general rate, from 5s to 4s a gallon. The suggested reduction on! m&it is as follows: —Preferential, 2d to Id a lb.; general, 3d to 2d. ''his will apply particularly to tinned meats and mutton imported from New. Zealand. Fish is reduced from 20 per cent to 10 per cent preferential rate, and from 40 lier cent to 30 per cent general. It is also proposed to abolish the export tax on trochus shell and beche-de-iner, and. of importance to tho native community, a reduction from £16,000 to £IO,OOO in native tax is budgeted for.
