HOUSEHOLDER'S ORDEAL AFrAIR AT MIRAMAR , ■■ - 0 [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] .WELLINGTON, Saturday A resident of 159 Darlington Road, Miramar, Mr. E. R. Newman, was surprised last night by Ihf switching off of the bathroom light while he was washing. He look out to see what was happening, and was met with a blow. • Mr. Newman recovered to find himself being effectively bound with sash cord by a tall, well-built man, who stuffed a handkerchief into his mouth and took another from a drawer to secure the first in position. Mr. Newman's feet were pulled almost to the small of his back, and his hands were drawn beneath his legs. Afterward he managed to roll himself to the verandah, and there he was found by Mr. Frank Alexander, an employee from a near by store, who was brought by two small girls who were afraid to pass the house because "There was a drunk man on the verandah." Mr. Alexander cut the cords and removed the gag, but Mr. Newman could neither speak nor walk for some little time. Mr. Alexander said the binding was the work of an expert. There were no loose ends at which a start could be made in easing the bonds, and one of the knots appeared to have been prepared beforehand. Airs. Newman was out, but returned at 10 o'clpck, two hours after the attack. She says the intruder must have been disturbed, as nothing was taken. The terminus store, where Mr. Alexander works, was the scene of an assault last May on the proprietor, Mr. J. E. fc'urness.
