SELWYN MEMORIAL

FINE CARVED ALTAR A memorial, consisting of an altar, riddle posts and communion rail, ig being erected by the parishioners of St. Mary's Church, New Plymouth, to Bishop Sclwyn and will be dedicated at a special anniversary service on December 1. The altar, which is exquisitely worked from fumed oak, has been constructed under the supervision of Mr. W. Andrews, of Epsom, who has be.en responsible for many other fine ecclesiastical works of art. It is 6ft. Bin. long, 3ft. 3in. high and 3ft. wide and took three months to produce. It is of modern Gothic design and provides an outstanding example of the woodworker's craftsmanship. The tracery around tho top of the altar was copied by Mr. Andrews from that on a sedilia brought from England by Bishop Selwyn about 70 years ago and now in St. John's College, Tainaki. Tho memorial, which is at present at the workshops of Messrs. Henderson and Pollard, Mount Eden, where much of the original work was done, will be sent to New Plymouth this weok. Mr. Andrews will superintend its installation.
