SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MATCH Visitors five for 314 (Received November 8, 11.25 p.m.) ADELAIDE, Nov. 8 The Marylebone cricketers to-day began a match against South Australia at Adelaide. The weather was favourable and the wicket perfect. The visitors' captain, Holmes, did not play owing to an injury to one of his hands. The new leg-before-wicket rule was used for the first time. Lyttelton won the toss for Marylebone, and Smith and Parks opened the batting. They gave a sparkling display and tackled the bowling, which was not particularly hostile, from all angles. Twelve runs came off the first over and Parks made 18 in the first 20 minutes. Hardstaff and Human played a brilliant partnership. Human made 78 in 45 minutes. He hit nine fours.* The 200 appeared on the board'in 212 minutes and the next century in 73 more minutes. When stumps were drawn Marylebone had made 314 for five wickets. Details of the score are:—

Nov. 8 The Sheffield Shield cricket contest was opened to-day with a match between New South Wales and Queensland. New South Wales in the first innings made 309 for six wickets (McGilvray 68, Easton, not out, 67, White, not out, 59, Marks 29, Fallowfield 28). The visitors, after-losing five wickets for 146, made a remarkable recovery, and the seventh wicket partnership added 101 in 84 minutes.

MATCH IN INDIA WIN FOR AUSTRALIANS CALCUTTA, Nov. 7 Australia, scoring 54 for the loss of four wickets in the second innings, defeated the West of India States at Rajkot by six wickets.
