EXTORTION CASE
STRANGE FEATURES WRONG MAN ARRESTED (Received November. 8, §,5 p.m.) NEW YORK. Nov. 7 A most unusual case of extortion, in which a cinema comedienne, Miss Thelma Todd was involved, was revealed to-day by the surrender to the police of Edward Schiffert, aged 26, for attempting to obtain 10,000 dollars from her. Schiffert had great difficulty in cou-, vincing the authorities that he was the culprit, because another man, Harry Schimanski, a janitor in the fiat building where Schiffert lived, was arrested in August and charged with the crime. It was fpund that the handwriting of both men was similar, and their voices also weje strangely alike. Because notes continued to be reoeived by Miss Todd after Schimanski's arrest the police are convinced that Schiffert, and not the janitor, sent them.
