AVIATION CONTESTS

THE HERALD SCHOLARSHIPS DELAYS DUE TO WEATHER Unsettled weather during the week V resulted in a further delay in testing candidates for the two aviation scholarships offered by the pfoprietors of the New Zealand Herald. The competitions are being organised by the Auck-.-land Aero Club, and one % pi'ihe jehqlar* Bhips is tenable at the club's Auckland"" headquarters, Mangere aerodrome,: and Y' the other at the Waikato airport, '>■' Rukuhia. Entfie&are still being received in large numbers, but the latest returns indi- !f ' cate that the Waikato total is slightly <• in excess of the Auckland figure. Among the candidates from Auckland, are three young women, and it is of interest to note thajt women applicants were well to the fore in the last Hebald aviation scholarship contests, about two £ears ago. The contests are open to all men and women between 16 and 30 years of age. Each applicant is required to pay an entry fee of £l, to cover the cost of about 15 minutes' flying, the duration of the air test, which follows an equal period of instruction on the ground.* Intending competitors are urged to enter early, as arrange meets are now being made to test candidates in groups, and it is also proposed later to visit various country centres for the convenience of enthusiasts who cannot attend either at Mangere or at Rukuhia. The shortage of skilled pilots both for defence purposes and for commercial work has prompted the proprietors of the Herald to make the scholarships available. It is expected that there will be a very large number of competitors before entries close, and already the ■ instructors have commented upon the desirable type of candidate coming forward.
