GROTESQUE SCENE

PRIESTS IN WOMEN'S GARB NORTHERN hj, FRONT INCIDENT Times Cable LONDON, Nov. 6 The Rome correspondent of the Times reports that General Biroli's native troops encountered in the Asllo Valley, due nort'h of Makale, a remarkable collection of Copt churches, some of architectural merit, excavated out of hard rock. Resident priests received tho troops with full liturgical ceremony, carrying crosses and many-colourod umbrellas. They somewhat detracted from the dignity of the occasion, however, by wearing women's garments given to them in propitiation by troops. The sight of 100 venerable, blackbearded hermits draped in gaudy petticoats and gay bodices solemnly chanting psalms sent the Italian soldiers into ahrieks of laughter.
